Dog Training - How to Train Your Dog to Come to
You & Prevent Dangerous Situations
Authored By: Jerry Yap

Having a dog that
will come to you when it's called is always nice and comforting. In
fact, it is more than nice. It is a basic requirement. To be able to
call your dog to come to you can also keep your dog away from dangerous
situations. It also assures your neighbor that they have nothing to
worry about when you bring you dog out for a run. Your dog should always
enjoys coming to you but it should also come on command without any
delay.
Your goal is to get
your dog headed your way immediately when called by voice or whistle. To
do this training, you would need a long check cord, a whistle and some
dog treats. The easiest way to teach your dog to come to you is to teach
him to sit. Get about 25 feet of rope and attach a snap loop on the end.
Hook it to the dog's collar. Command the dog to sit and then back away
about 10 feet. Kneel down. Give several quick blasts on the whistle and
say the dog's name, and then say "come". That should get the dog coming
to your direction. If the dog deviates halfway or is distracted, pull on
the rope and say "come". When the dog comes to you, lavish him with
praise. There is no reason to delay giving praises when a dog comes when
called.
The dog responded
correctly and she is assured of praises each time she does it. Then
command him to sit before backing up a bit further and try the act
again. Whistle carry much better than your voice and can be heard over
the din of road noise, over the voices of crowd. If the dog doesn't come
to you when you blow it, he may be choosing to ignore you. This means
that you have some more training to do with the long cord. You may want
to use treats as a reward for proper response. You call, the dog comes
and you provide a little snack for him. But honestly, if you are down to
the dog level, talking to him in a happy voice, most of the dogs would
come to you especially if you are pulling a bit of the rope as guidance.
But then, a little treat wouldn't hurt.
There are some things
you must take note while training your dog to come to you. Never call
the dog in an angry voice. Never ever hit the dog when it arrives. To do
so is punishing the dog for doing what you have asked and before long;
no dog would come to you since the result is a beating. Dogs know when
you are angry. Never punish a dog for coming to you. It is not only
cruel but disruptive to the training. Pay close attention to the
commands you are giving. The command is "come", not "here boy, see here,
get here" or anything else you might decide to say. Be consistent with
your command and precede it with a whistle. This is especially important
in the early stage of the training if you are encouraging your dog to
respond to both your voice and the whistle. As the training
progresses, you can just call by voice or just with the whistle. You
should mix a couple of these commands during the training.
The end result is to
let you dog know that regardless of which command (voice of whistle), he
should respond immediately. It would also make the training more
interesting for both you and your dog.
Training like this for 15 minutes at a time, three to five times a
week, will really put you on the road to having a great dog that comes
to you every time you call him!
