Dog Training Tips -
How to Stop Puppy Biting Problem in Minutes
Authored By Jerry Yap

Have you noticed
puppy seems to be fond of biting our hands and feet? What this dog is
displaying is called puppy biting. It can be solved by obedience and
consistency. Puppies and dogs need to chew. Chewing is instinctual to
them, just like playing games are instinctual to children. You can't
teach a puppy or dog to "never chew" but you can teach them to chew on
appropriate things and not your hands. For the puppy, he is probably
teething and his mouth is probably painful so telling him "No" to stop
him from chewing is not going to work.
Before correcting
this puppy biting behavior, make him wear a leash and collar indoor at
all times. This will make games of chase end quickly as you can stop him
by stepping on the leash anytime. It will also give you a control by
popping his leash when he refuses to listen to your voice commands. With
that in place, start off by giving him a set of toys of appropriate
hardness, texture and thickness to chew. Give him varieties to explore.
Many puppies enjoy chewing on a wet rag. Avoid thin latex toy and the
puppy's sharp teeth can easily tore this and the ingesting the plastic
can be also be dangerous for them.
Now, here's how you
can teach him to chew on the right things. When you catch your puppy or
dog chewing on something he shouldn't, give him a "NO" and pop the
leash. Try giving him raw bones or milk bones. This will keep them
occupied for a long time. Like any chew object, you need to supervise
your dog when he has anything to chew. My dog ended up with indigestion
after swallowing a bone and I had to bring him to the vet immediately.
What happens if your
dog "bites" you? I find the following effective:
1. Scream like a
wounded puppy. The type of noise a puppy makes when someone steps on his
tail. Look extremely hurt and upset and ignore him for a few minutes.
Speaking the "dog's language" works wonder at times!
2. A sharp and almost
growl like "No bite" and tap slightly under his chin. This would be
imitating an adult dog growling at the puppy to let him know that he is
not pleased with his behavior.
3. Do not allow the
puppy to be left unsupervised for whatever reasons. He is just like a
toddler and needs supervision.
4. Be consistent.
Every time you see him chewing on something inappropriate, he needs
immediate correction. Stop whatever you are doing and correct him
immediately. And every time you see him chewing on something
appropriate, praise him with a simple "good boy" to let him know that he
is chewing on the right thing.
