Dog Obedience Training
- How to Drive a Car With Your Dog
Authored By Jerry Yap
Having your pal
accompany you on the road, whether for short or long trips, can e a
whole lot of fun. Most dogs love traveling, love the car and eagerly
anticipating their next travel adventure with you. Before you hit the
road with your dog, however, there are some things to keep in mind.
Keep your dog
confined while in the car. You will find it difficult to concentrate on
driving if your dog is overly excited, jumping back and forth, or
suddenly become carsick. Safety is also a concern. Even when travelling
at just 10 miles an hour, braking quickly to avoid an animal or person
in the road subjects your dog to the risk of broken bones from being
projected into the backseat, hitting the dashboard, or worse, getting
ejected from the vehicle altogether. And no matter how competent you are
as a driver or how routine it is to have your pal beside you at the
wheel, neither of you is safe from irresponsible drivers.
During the trip, pull
into a rest stop every fifty miles or so to give your dog a chance to
stretch, drink water and go potty. This will prevent him from becoming
too stressed and restless, which will lead him to dislike car travel.
Frequent stops help avoid stiff joints in older dogs. Puppies need
special attention and safety precautions while traveling. Frequent stops
also help avoid carsickness. If your dog does have issues with
carsickness, talk to your vet about giving him a motion sickness
medication. When you are driving home a new puppy or dog, have another
adult or older children hold and stroke the dog. Make sure you have
water and doggy treats if the ride will be longer than 30 minutes. After
15 minutes, pull over and offer your dog some water and a treat. A toy
or stuffed animal toy might also be a refreshing sight. This will help
to take your
dog's mind off his anxiety and redirect his attention to you. Offer
your dog the same attention and safety you would give a child riding
with you.
